"You find the companies, both private sector and public sector, grappling with ensuring this compliance," says Sewlal. "Some of that deals with understanding what the data protection framework expects from you and how you unpack it and making sure there are officers who understand the implementation of the data protection and cybersecurity framework."

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Sewlal also discusses:

  • Top concerns for enterprises in their digital transformation journey;
  • How the Protection of Personal Information Act is being followed in South Africa;
  • Cybersecurity trends expected in 2022.

Sewlal is the officer for legal, policy, research and information technology analysis and the deputy information officer with the Information Regulator of South Africa. She started her career in private practice and then served with the Office of the Public Protector in Durban. While there, she served as acting chief director legal services and headed the legal directorate with the Department of Labor, Workman’s Compensation and the Unemployment Insurance Fund.
