Employees needed to understand the security issues associated with connecting to the network while using personal devices and get accustomed to remote working software that was needed but had been adopted with less vetting than usual, says Piedmont CISO Monique Hart. Piedmont had to grapple with securing everything from telemedicine appointments to COVID-related medical and vaccine data (see: Hospital CISO on Why Hackers Pursue Research, Pediatric Data).

"There was a lot of education that was required, as well as new technology," Hart says. "We needed to explain how we were going to do it remotely to ensure the individuals that are accessing our environment are truly those that should be and our patient data is being protected."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Hart also discusses:

  • The top security challenges since the onset of COVID-19;
  • Why patient data has become such a big security issue;
  • The most overlooked issues around healthcare security.

Hart is responsible for overseeing the management of material risk of electronic healthcare information and content for Piedmont Healthcare's business, employee and patient information. She has more than 20 years of practical work experience in information risk management, IT policy and governance, vulnerability management and incident response. Her career crosses multiple industries including healthcare, food and beverage, media and entertainment, human resources, transportation and telecommunications.
