Open Source HIE Software Released

Aurion 4.0 Includes Security Details
Open Source HIE Software Released
The Alembic Foundation has unveiled Aurion 4.0., the first release of its rebranded version of the CONNECT open source software for health information exchange.

The foundation was recently formed to take over the open source project from the federal government, David Riley, president, explained in a recent interview (see: Open Source HIE Initiative Described). As with earlier versions, the updated version of the software includes details on security.

Aurion incorporates the Nationwide Health Information Network standards, services and policies that enable the secure exchange of health information over the Internet. In the Exchange Project, five government agencies and five private organizations have been using CONNECT for health information exchange. Some software companies also have developed products based, in part, on CONNECT.

The Alembic Foundation hopes to broaden use of the rebranded Aurion software far beyond the initial Exchange Project participants, Riley said. Organizations can use the open source software to make complex queries and then "pull" information about a patient from multiple sources.

The updated HIE software is now available for download. The Aurion Project will host a webinar on technical aspects of the software May 18. Details on the enhancements to the HIE software are available online.
