Two units of the Department of Health and Human Services are heading the mobility best practices project - the Office for Civil Rights and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. Within ONC, the office of Joy Pritts, chief privacy officer, is taking a lead role.

"The project goal is to develop an effective and practical way to bring awareness and understanding to those in the clinical sector to help them better secure and protect health information while using mobile devices," an HHS announcement states. The project will build on a document known as HHS HIPAA Security Rule - Remote Use Guidance that was issued in 2006.

HHS plans to host a public roundtable on the issue this spring.
