The National Security Threat of Narcissism

How Enemies Sow Seeds of Misinformation and Disinformation
The National Security Threat of Narcissism

Society has become increasingly isolated and disintegrated, leaving us vulnerable to exploitation by our adversaries. Enemies can easily take advantage of this lack of cohesion to sow seeds of misinformation and disinformation. Elisabeth Braw elaborates on the threat of narcissism.

"If you look at the forums in which our adversaries today, mostly China and Russia, try to weaken us, one is through disinformation and misinformation and one other is through cyber aggression. When we consume information today, we don’t think, ‘What is my role for society?’ We just share it because we feel it’s our right and we interpret information to our advantage as well."

In this episode of "Cybersecurity Unplugged," Braw discusses:

  • The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack and organizations' lack of preparedness;
  • How to create more public awareness about responding to cyberattacks;
  • Why narcissism is a national security threat.

Braw leads the "Modern Deterrence" project for the Royal United Services Institute. The project focuses on how governments, businesses and civil society can work together to strengthen defense against existing and emerging threats. She also serves as a commissioner on the U.K. National Preparedness Commission and is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Braw is a columnist at Foreign Policy Magazine and frequently writes op-eds for The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times and Politico.
