  • Some 1.7 million individuals were notified of a health information breach incident involving data from The New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. The case, involving stolen backup tapes, affected more individuals than any other major incident reported so far under the HITECH Act breach notification rule.
  • Authorities announced penalties in two cases for violations of the HIPAA privacy rule. Massachusetts General Hospital entered a resolution agreement that calls for paying a $1 million settlement and taking corrective action. Cignet Health was slapped with a $4.3 million civil monetary penalty.
