Banks and mobile network operators should collaborate to mitigate the risks of SIM swap fraud, which can lead to account takeovers, says Clare Messenger, global head of fraud protection at the U.K. telecom firm JT Group Ltd.

“The mobile operators are sitting on a wealth of data that could prevent this fraud from happening in the first place. This data can help banks in their authentication processes,” Messenger says.

Mobile operators offer technologies, including applications that check whether a phone is on call divert mode or has been reported as lost or stolen, that banks can use to help fight fraud, she says.
