Employee Fired in Miami Breach Case
Jackson Health System in Miami has fired an employee who inappropriately accessed confidential information on 1,800 patients.

The health system, which is offering affected patients free credit card fraud protection, is not revealing the nature of the information accessed. It's cooperating with law enforcement officials on the investigation, according to a brief statement. Jackson Health System owns Jackson Memorial Hospital and other hospitals and clinics.

Under the HITECH Act's breach notification rule, security incidents must be reported to the patients affected as well as the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights. As of June 14, the Jackson Health System incident was not yet on OCR's list of major health information breaches.
